# Notebooks

> Folders for notes, canvases and projects, which publish as a small website.

A notebook holds any number of notes, canvases and projects. An item can be in one notebook at most, and notebooks can't be nested.

## Move items in and out

Use **Move to notebook** on any item. Choose **No notebook** to move it back to the top level.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Items inside a notebook are shared and published along with it. Moving something into a published notebook makes it public.

## Delete a notebook

Only the notebook is deleted. Everything inside moves back to the top level. Only the owner can delete a notebook.

## Grid or table

Every list, notebooks included, switches between **Table view** and **Grid view**. Your choice is remembered for each list in this browser.

## Publish a notebook

Publish a notebook and it becomes a small website: a page listing everything inside, with each item one click away. Anything you add later is published automatically. See [Publishing](https://docs.octonote.ai/guides/publishing.md).
