# Notes

> A block editor that speaks code, math and diagrams.

A note is a document made of blocks. Type `/` anywhere to add one.

## Blocks

Besides the usual paragraphs, headings, lists, checklists, quotes, tables, code and images, the `/` menu has:

| Block | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Equation** | A math equation on its own line, in LaTeX. |
| **Inline equation** | Math inside a sentence, in LaTeX. |
| **Mermaid diagram** | Flowcharts, sequence diagrams and more, drawn from text. |
| **Canvas** | A preview card that links to one of your canvases. |
| **Figure** | Part of a canvas, embedded as an image. See [Figures](https://docs.octonote.ai/guides/canvases.md#figures). |

**Code blocks** are syntax highlighted; pick the language on the block.

## Math

Write `$…$` for math inside a sentence and `$$…$$` (or a ` ```math ` block) for an equation on its own line. In the equation editor, press <kbd>⌘</kbd>/<kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Enter</kbd> or click away to finish.

## Mermaid diagrams

Add a **Mermaid diagram** block or paste a ` ```mermaid ` block. Use **Edit Mermaid source** to change the text and **Show diagram** to go back. You can open it **Fullscreen** and drag its edges to resize it.

## Images

Paste, drop, or use `/image`. PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and SVG up to 10 MB.

## Paste markdown

Paste markdown and it becomes rich blocks, math and mermaid included. Paste a whole document into the title and the body goes at the top of the note.

To see a note as markdown, use **View as markdown** in the note's header, and **Back to the editor** to return.

## Saving

Notes save on their own about a second after you stop typing. The header shows **Saving…** and then **Saved**. If you can only view a note, you'll see **View only**.

> [!TIP]
>
> Change the note's typeface with the **Type** picker in the header.
