# Publishing

> Turn a note, canvas, project or whole notebook into a public page.

Publishing makes a **public, read-only page** that anyone can open with the link. Readers don't need an account.

## Publish

1. Click **Share**.
2. Turn on **Publish to web**. Only the owner can do this.
3. Copy the **Public URL**, or open it.

Turn the same switch off to unpublish. If you publish again later, the link stays the same.

The address looks like `octonote.ai/pub/how-a-url-shortener-works-kftx8d`: your title plus a short code. It can't be changed.

## Publishing a notebook or project

Publish a notebook and everything inside is public too, including items you add later. Those items show **Public via** followed by the notebook's name in their header and **Published via notebook** in your lists, so it's never a surprise. To make one private again, move it out of the notebook or unpublish the notebook.

## What readers see

* Your name, the publish date and the reading time.
* **Upvote** and **downvote**. Anyone sees the counts; voting needs an account.
* A contents minimap for headings on notes, and for figures on canvases. On phones, a **Contents** button.
* Projects open in the view you chose, and readers can switch between **Note**, **Split** and **Canvas**.
* Notebooks show their notes, canvases and projects as a grid or a list.
* A link preview card when the page is shared on social media or in chat.

Your name comes from **Settings → Account → Name**. Your email is never shown.
